Elevate Community Wellness

In 2020, Mammoth Hospital embarked on a revolutionary endeavor by founding Elevate, a community wellness program that offers Eastern Sierra residents and visitors proactive, preventative lifestyle management tools in the form of classes, courses and support groups.

The brainchild of physical therapist Jen McMahon, Elevate is meant to empower regular people to take their health—physical, mental, and social—into their own hands.

Elevate course offerings commenced in 2022 at the South Gateway Apartments in Mammoth Lakes and philanthropic gifts covered instructor costs for all our programs, making Elevate affordable and accessible to the entire community.

The tangible effects of Elevate are already rippling through the population of the Eastern Sierra.

“I am so impressed with this program,” says Frank Cassidy, who attends the PWR!Moves Parkinson Wellness Recovery course. Frank was diagnosed with Parkinsons in 2018, and two months after attending his course through Elevate, Frank and his wife Robin say even their children have noticed improvement. “They say, man, dad, you even look taller.”

“It’s helped in so many ways,” says Robin. “Getting out of the house, the sociability, the exercise, it’s all connected.” The Cassidys, who live in Lee Vining, meet other members of the course for lunch in Mammoth each week following their class. As Robin talks about Frank’s improvement, she hops up to help a classmate put on his sweater. “When you come in this door, you’re among friends,” says Frank.

“I feel like Jen is my personal concierge,” says Eva Eilenberg, who attended the Return to Ski & Ride course, taught by physical therapist Christine Seibert, in the fall of 2023. “I’ve never even thought about what you do to get your body in shape for skiing.”

“Who knew that I had forgotten how to jump,” jokes Pat Mowlavi, who regularly attends Move to Improve, a 45-minute strength class run by personal trainer Debbie North. Debbie regularly has her students hopping off boxes, bounding across the gym, and hoisting kettle bells to a Bruce Springsteen soundtrack. “I feel better prepared to remain injury-free, and I am getting stronger, more agile and meeting such cool people.”

Elevate’s goals for 2024 include improving access to all programs by identifying Spanish-speaking instructors and establishing a scholarship program through the Mammoth Hospital Foundation for those with financial barriers.
